Northallerton Decking Enquire

Railings and steps

The right railings and steps can make a deck feel part of the garden. We fit timber, rope and glass railings, steps and gentle lighting.

The quick answer

We build timber, rope and glass railings, broad steps and gentle lighting. Railings are fitted to any drop over 600mm, following Building Regulations guidance. In the countryside, low, warm lighting pointed downward keeps the deck safe without spoiling dark skies or disturbing wildlife.

Timber and rope

Timber posts with rope or timber rails suit cottages and country gardens. Rope looks informal; it's best on lower decks where formal guarding isn't required.

Glass

Glass keeps a view open across fields, ideal for raised decks.

Steps

Broad, shallow steps feel generous and comfortable, and can double as seating.

Gentle lighting

The North York Moors is a Dark Sky Reserve, and many villages enjoy dark skies. Low-level, warm lights pointing down at steps are safer and kinder to wildlife than bright floodlights.

Handrails on steps

A handrail beside steps helps everyone, especially older visitors and on wet days. Timber handrails are warm to touch and suit country gardens.

Suiting the setting

For stone cottages we often suggest simple square timber posts and rails, sometimes with rope infill on low decks. For barn conversions, slim glass or steel can sit nicely alongside large glazing.

Wiring

Low-voltage lights run from a transformer plugged into an outdoor socket. Any new socket is fitted by a qualified electrician.

Questions people ask

Can we have a rope balustrade?

Yes, on lower decks. For drops over 600mm, guarding must meet Building Regulations guidance, so we'll suggest options.

What lighting is best for dark skies?

Low, warm, downward lights at steps and edges. We avoid bright upward lighting.
